About Hayes Inn
Hayes Tavern, as it was originally known, was built in 1838 by Richard Hayes, a descendant of United Empire Loyalists who had fled the United States at the end of the American Revolution. In 1869, Hayes Tavern was sold to Robert Porter who operated the inn under the name of Porter's Hotel. Porter's Hotel thrived until prohibition was adopted in the late 1800's. Sadly, prohibition sealed the fate of the old hotel and Hayes Tavern was abandoned until the mid 1960's when a local historian and visionary, Roy Stevens, recognized the historical and architectural significance of the Georgian inn and relocated it to its present site, where it has been entirely restored. Below you will find a selection of quotes from past guests along with a collection of articles in PDF format detailing the history of Hayes Inn.
